A Christian Perspective on Indian Elections
Check here: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/july/6.13.html for a discussion of the results of recent Indian national and state elections from the point of view of Christians in Orissa state. Two comments. The BJP runs on Hindutva (Hindu nationalism) but generally governs from the center. It gets away with this because there's no party to its "right" and, after all, most Indians care most about bread and butter (or is it chipati and ghee?) issues. Second, the article is absolutely correct when it notes that it was the votes of secular Hindus that led to the BJP's defeat. None of the Hindus I met in India who ventured a political opinion (yeah, I know, not exactly a valid sample size) had anything but disdain for the BJP's electioneering antics.
