Minority Day
After last week's attack on Christians in Gojra, the Government of Pakistan designated yesterday (11 August) as Minority Day. It seems most Christians would rather call it "Black Day:" http://www.pakistanchristianpost.com/headlinenewsd.php?hnewsid=1348. The moderate Islamic coverage was reasonable (http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?c=Article_C&cid=1248187822722&pagename=Zone-English-News/NWELayout) although the discrepancies in the numbers of Christians killed shouldn't unnoticed. Nazir Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress, spoke on Monday at the National Press Club in Washington; you can watch it here:http://www.realcourage.org/2009/08/press-conference-challenging-blasphemy-law/.
Lot's of good-sounding stuff. A more vigorous public presence by Christians in Pakistan might help; alternatively, it could spur further attacks. Organized pressure on Pakistan through its ambassador to America (Husain Haqqani) and our government (I'm not sure the State Department cares but elected types in Congress might be persuaded to step up) can't hurt.
