Check out two stories from this morning's NYT: "Hate Engulfs Christians in Pakistan" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/03/world/asia/03pstan.html?th&emc=th) and "[Swat] Valley Fears New Battles" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/03/world/asia/03swat.html?th&emc=th). In brief, many of the people of Pakistan have been radicalized, the government of Pakistan is unable/unwilling to protect its Christian minority, and the army of Pakistan lets the leaders of the Taliban in the Swat Valley get away (while terrorizing the small fry).
I've had many more details about the first story through CLAAS (Centre for Legal Aid Assistance & Settlement; http://www.claas.org.uk/). When the only way you can get the government to take action is to lay your dead--women and children--on the roadside of the central traffic circle, you know that our ally Pakistan is hardly better than our ostensible common enemy, the Taliban.
