Dick Cates taught me evidence law. I can't say I learned the FRE very well but he was a decent guy. We'd regularly get him off track by asking about his trials. We even got him to deliver the closing argument from his defense of some particularly obstreperous anti-war demonstrators. Would probably have gotten a jury of twelve Tea Partiers to acquit.
Although the first sentence of his obituary is bizarre (who dies surrounded by a family of natural causes?), it gives the flavor of an old-school progressive. Not many of them around any more.
