It's not my fault that each of our three children is a cat lover. It should thus come as no surprise that Thanksgiving evening found us seeing Puss In Boots, the recent DreamWorks release. Splitting from his compatriots Shrek and Donkey from the Shrek trilogy, Puss returns voiced by Antonio Banderas. Enjoyable but neither as witty nor as true to the fairy-story universe as the first two in the Shrek series although I got a kick out of Puss' "medicinal purpose catnip" defense.
Friday night was The Lincoln Lawyer DVD. Who knew Matthew McConaughey could act? Or that Ryan Phillippe could pass for a poor man's Matt Damon? Disappointed to see my favorite actor, William H. Macy, get it only one-third of the way through the film but he wasn't particularly well utilized anyway.
A law student had told me that Lincoln Lawyer was a good vehicle for questions of professional ethics. Well, yes, if you think suborning perjury is a close call. While there were other, closer ethical questions the movie is a typical American thriller resolved with justice all around. Screenplay, dialog, cinematography, and all-around technical stuff were top-notch; just not quite the depth to go with the high production values.
