Indian Traffic, Religion, and (Lack of?) Philanthropy

Hindu writer Aakar Patal wrote an interesting piece here: http://www.livemint.com/2009/07/02203128/Why-Indians-don8217t-give-b.html?pg=2

Patal theorizes that Indian culture and Hinduism specifically account for the high level of anti-social opportunism and lack of philanthropic activity in India. I don't know enough about Hinduism to evaluate that aspect of his thesis but I can say--based on a limited 4 months in India--that what I observed supports and defeats Patal's contentions. The refrain "all India is a trash bin" will certainly be borne out by anyone's observations. And the traffic? Let's just say that I got for free what Americans pay good money to experience at Busch Gardens or Six Flags.

But the philanthropy of B.S. Parihar (founder and patron of the Lav-Kush orphanage and the Astha Home for Seniors) testifies to at least one committed Hindu's deep concern for the well-being of the less blessed.
