"The New Shape of World Christianity"

Mark Noll is an excellent historian; I've made use of his work in one of my published articles. His Christian faith does not color the results of his work although it clearly directs his historical interests. Check here for an interview about his latest book, The New Shape of World Christianity : http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/july/19.38.html

In brief, Nathan Hatch's The Democratization of American Christianity has been taken global.

Certainly for the past half-century social critics have reflected on the influence of American (and particularly evangelical) Christianity on the world scene. Most have decried what they perceived as the export of a particularly "Americanized" version of Christianity (if they weren't upset about Christianity in any flavor). Noll suggests that what was exported was not peculiarly American but instead necessarily post-Christendom. He notes that the progress of Christianity around the world (including India) in the past 30 years has seen both "indiginization" and "rationalization" (e.g., emphasis on technique and counting). These are, Noll argues, characteristic of a disestablished and market-oriented world, not America as such.
