"Beasts of the Southern Wild"

Not your standard Christmas fare but on the advice of Jeremy we rented (yes, rented, no streaming for  fogies like us) Beasts of the Southern Wild, one of the stranger but intriguing  films we've seen.

With traces of magical realism, Beasts traces the coming-of-age of six-year old motherless Hushpuppy (spectacularly played by Quvenzhané Wallis) as she overcomes the slow death of her alcoholic father, a hurricane that destroys her poor Louisiana bayou community, the intervention of well-meaning government officialdom, near-kidnapping to a floating brothel, and--yes--menacing aurochs. Even given the magical undertones, there were a few plot discontinuities but the writing, cinematography, and extraordinary acting of an ensemble of non-professionals made up for them.

Like nothing I've seen before, and while I'm sure there are folks who would not like it, I recommend Beasts to those who are typically bored by standard Hollywood productions.
